Frequently asked questions
How will my company benefit from the program
The benefits of supporting lactation in the workplace are significant, and include potential reduction in medical costs due the health benefits of breast milk. Breast-fed babies have 50-70% fewer occurrences of common childhood illnesses such as ear infections, respiratory infections, and gastroenteritis. And because these children are often healthier, their parents miss work less often – in fact, moms of breast-fed babies have 50% fewer one-day absences compared to formula-fed babies. Additionally, the retention rate of employees at companies who provide lactation support programs is much higher than without; research found a 94% retention rate at companies offering lactation programs, compared to the national average of 59%.
Employers today are often under pressure to attract and retain valuable female talent, and to provide a supportive family-friendly culture that helps new moms return to work. Our customizable, single-source solution is specifically designed to make it easy for you to give your employees the support they need to successfully balance their career with breastfeeding and a growing family.
You get an easy, measurable way to show your commitment to working moms – and a competitive advantage by providing a supportive environment that helps attract and retain employees.
What products are available through New Moms’ Healthy Returns?
There are five key pillars in the New Moms’ Healthy Returns program. You can choose the full suite, or just what you need to complete your current breastfeeding offering. We’ll work with you to determine what’s best for your organization based on the number of employees you have and how many locations you have. Here are the five pillars:
- Top-of-the-line Medela products: hospital-grade Symphony® pumps and lactation essentials to make pumping at work faster and easier.
- Easy-to-place Mamava suites to pump in: a plug-and-play space solution that gives moms the comfortable space they deserve.
- 24/7 Virtual Support from pregnancy through baby’s first year: in-the-moment access to experts, including pediatric nurses and lactation consultants, to give mom peace-of-mind as she navigates pregnancy and breastfeeding transitions.
- Trusted Educational Resources: a celebratory gift box, customizable employee communications, and educational resources including Medela’s Breastfeeding University, to help parents feel supported and empowered in their journey.
- Breast milk shipping for traveling employees: get moms where they need to be without having to worry about how they can feed their baby while on the road.
What is required to support breastfeeding moms in the workplace?
There are multiple levels of protection and laws for nursing mothers.
In 2010, the government enacted the federal Break Time for Nursing Mothers law that requires employers covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) to provide basic accommodations for breastfeeding mothers at work. These accommodations include time for non-exempt (hourly) employees to express milk and a private space that is not a bathroom each time they need to pump.
Many states also have more stringent laws in place. To find out what breastfeeding laws are in place in your state, visit Mamava’s state-by-state guide to breastfeeding legislation.
Can you give me more details on the 24/7 Virtual Support?
The 24/7 Virtual Support service gives your employees unlimited, on-demand access to registered nurses and lactation consultants experienced in pediatric care. The service can be used by the whole family to access an expert whenever they need advice from pregnancy to baby’s health and feeding. It also has a customizable option to connect with other telephonic benefits you might provide, such as EAP or a Wellness program.
What is the cost of the program?
Our program costs vary depending upon the products and services implemented, the amount of equipment purchased, and the number of employees who become pregnant and enroll. We charge standard rates for products purchased for use in the workplace (e.g., pumps and supplies), and a per-case rate for services, so clients only pay for what they use.
Additionally, our pricing model is different from most wellbeing and family support vendors. We price using a case-rate or usage-based model, so the employer only pays for the products and services that are used. This pricing model allows for greater cost control and optimization of the organization’s spending.

Yes. Each employee will receive a beautiful, celebratory Gift Box with a customizable welcome letter from your company, and detailed information about the specific benefits offered to them through the program. We will also provide customized announcement materials for you to launch the program, and we deliver a series of emails to each enrolled employee that educate and connect them with all the unique parental benefits you offer.
Can this program be offered to spouses of employees?
Yes, many employers choose to offer the 24/7 Virtual Support to all parents in their employee population, including those whose spouses are pregnant.
What does single-source mean?
Our single-source solution saves HR departments time by allowing them to work with one vendor – Medela – to access the products and services of multiple best-in-class brands, avoiding the hassle of multiple vendors, contracts, and billing cycles.
How does program customization work?
Depending on what your organization needs, you can choose the parts of the program that help you fill out your offering. The program is designed so you don’t have to purchase everything at once – only what your employees need – and we can help you evaluate the options and determine what will provide the most benefit.
How long does it take to set up a Mamava pod?
From order to delivery, the Mamava fulfillment process typically takes about 6 weeks and can be mom-ready the day of delivery. Installation takes about four hours with two people.
